Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a child when her father, who was employed as an carnival barker, died. Her mother had to perform tasks such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was a student and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. But she only stayed in school for two years before going on to pursue an acting career. Her path wasn't without its challenges. In New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. the theatre work that she wanted eluded. While in New York, she worked in a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston. There she earned a living as an usherette by day, and at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first acting job. Drama studies led her to graduate from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
